Rename, hide or make optional WooCommerce's own checkout fields
"Postcode" should say "ZIP". Nobody needs the company field. The phone number should be optional. Here is what the Checkout block lets you change on its own, and how to change the rest.
What the Checkout block does on its own
Open the Checkout page in the editor, select the Checkout block and look at Address fields in the sidebar. Three fields can be hidden, made optional or made required there: company, apartment or suite, and phone. That is the whole list. There is no setting to rename a field, to switch off any of the others, or to change their order.
Changing the rest without code
Fieldwright puts WooCommerce's own checkout fields in the same list as the ones you add, in WooCommerce → Fieldwright, with a live preview beside them.
- Rename any of them. “Postal code” to “ZIP”, “Phone” to “Mobile number”, “Company” to “Business name”. A new name applies in every country, and the builder shows you each country's own wording before you replace it.
- Switch them off. Company, apartment or suite, phone, address, city, state, postcode, first name and last name can all come off the checkout.
- Make them optional, or required. The change is honoured on the page and again when the order is placed, so an optional postcode really is optional.
- Reorder the address form. Drag WooCommerce's fields and yours in one list, so a delivery instructions box can sit between the street address and the city.
- Hide the order notes box and the coupon field on the checkout. The coupon field in the cart stays, so a coupon link still works.
For company, apartment or suite and phone, Fieldwright writes to the same setting the block's sidebar uses, so the two always agree.
What to keep
- Email address and country or region cannot be removed or made optional. WooCommerce needs an email address to place an order, and the country decides every other address rule.
- Check your payment and shipping plugins before you drop the name or phone fields. Some gateways and rate providers still ask for them and fail the order without them. Fieldwright repeats WooCommerce's warning beside those fields.
